Dynamic rupture on a material interface with spontaneous generation of plastic strain in the bulk

چکیده
We discuss 2D simulations of in-plane ruptures on a fault between different solids in a model that includes dynamic generation of plastic strain off the fault. The fault is governed by a regularized friction with a gradual response to abrupt changes of normal stress, while plastic strain in the bulk is governed by a Coulomb yielding criterion. The occurrence of off-fault damage stabilizes the slip velocity on the fault. Stable self-sustaining ruptures propagate on the material interface as narrow unidirectional pulses in the direction of slip on the more compliant side of the fault. Plastic strain is generated only on the stiffer side of the fault (the tensional quadrant in the direction of rupture propagation) in a strip of approximately constant width that is correlated with the slip velocity on the fault. Simulations for various values of confining normal stress, material contrast and cohesion in the bulk suggest that significant generation of off-fault damage is limited to conditions that correspond to the top few kilometers of the crust. The results are compatible with field observations of shallow asymmetric damage patterns in the structure of several large faults. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

New geometry for TCP: severe plastic deformation of tubes
Since tubes are widely used for different industrial applications, processing of tubes by the Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) method has been the target of different attempts. Among these attempts, development of SPD processes for tubes based on Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) has been more successful. As an illustration, Tube Channel Pressing (TCP) has been presented as an attractive SP...

[1] We perform numerical simulations of spontaneous dynamic rupture governed by a slip-weakening law along a bimaterial interface (fault) with off-fault damage in the form of Coulomb plastic yielding. Off-fault plastic yielding stabilizes the wrinkle-like slip pulse in terms of a decreasing rate of slip velocity growth. With a variety of model parameters, ruptures on the fault are bilateral, wh...
متن کاملInelastic strain distribution and seismic radiation from rupture of a fault kink
[1] We extend an elastodynamic finite element method to incorporate off-fault plastic yielding into a dynamic earthquake rupture model. We simulate rupture for models of faults with a kink (a sharp change in fault strike), examining how off-fault plastic yielding affects rupture propagation, seismic radiation, and near-fault strain distribution. We find that high-frequency radiation from a kink...
متن کاملA new approach for fabrication of bulk MMCs using Accumulative Channel-die Compression Bonding (ACCB)
A new severe plastic deformation (SPD) based technique entitled Accumulative channel-die compression bonding (ACCB) is proposed for the fabrication of high strength multi-layered Al/Cu composites for the first time. In order to primarily demonstrate the capabilities of ACCB in the fabrication of metal matrix composites (MMCs), AA 1050 and pure Cu strips were processed. The primary Al/Cu sandwic...

Today, steel to aluminum joints are used to facilitate transportation and fuel consumption. These joints are applied from nuclear, aerospace and naval to automobile and kitchen industries. According to previous studies fusion welding processes are not suitable methods for these joints, solid-state welding, especially friction stir welding, is a proper way to use for these joints. However, using...
